• ACCIONA and its partners were awarded the contract for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the first phase of the plant, with a capacity of 135,000 m³ per day.

The Tseung Kwan O desalination plant in Hong Kong received a prestigious award on 20 November at the CIC Sustainable Construction Award 2023.

ACCIONA and its partners were given the Gold Award in the Project Owner category for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the plant.

These awards, organised by the Construction Industry Council (CIC), recognise best sustainability practices by organisations and professionals in the sustainable construction sector − and particularly among the younger generation −, promoting the continuous improvement of these procedures.

The award to ACCIONA and its partners highlights the companies’ commitment to sustainable and innovative practices at the Tseung Kwan O desalination plant, currently under construction.

The project, awarded to ACCIONA in 2020 - together with its partners Jardine Engineering Corporation Limited and China State Construction Engineering Limited - includes the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the first phase of the desalination plant.

The facility will have a capacity of 135,000 m3/day, equivalent to the water consumption of 850,000 people. The contract period is ten years, with a possible extension for another five years.

The construction phase is expected to be completed in May 2024, at which time ACCIONA will fine-tune all system processes to ensure the highest availability.

This project offers the city a solution to the challenges of climate change and low rainfall and the plant is expected to start providing 100% water from December this year.
