• The company has completed the caisson for the main deck of the viaduct over the River Pambre, part of the A-54 highway between Melide and Palas de Rei

ACCIONA has reached one of the most important technical milestones in the construction of the A-54 Lugo - Santiago de Compostela highway, between Melide and Palas de Rei (Galicia). It is the completion of the caisson of the main deck of the viaduct over the River Pambre.

This viaduct is one of the five viaducts included in the section of the highway being built by the company. With a width of almost 25 meters and a length of 977 meters, it will be the longest viaduct in the province of Lugo.

Its single deck will accommodate the two sides of the highway, each with two 3.5-meter lanes, for a total of 16 spans. ACCIONA used more than 25,000 m3 of concrete and almost 5,000 tons of steel to build the bridge, which currently holds the Spanish record for the length of a span built by self-shoring.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

In 2017, the Ministry of Public Works awarded ACCIONA the contract to build the Melide junction (south) - Palas de Rei junction (Lugo) section of the A-54 highway, Lugo - Santiago de Compostela

This project, worth more than 70 million euros and awarded to ACCIONA, involves the construction of an 11.7-kilometer section of the N-547 in the south, which will significantly improve road safety in the region.

This new section of highway will pass through the municipalities of Melide, Santiso and Palas de Rei, and will end near the town of Palas de Rei, where it will connect with the next section of the A-54 Palas de Rei - Guntín, already in operation.

The route includes two junctions and a total of 18 structures, among which six viaducts stand out: three of them over the rivers Furelos, Seco and Pambre; two over the streams do Vilar and San Xulian; and a last viaduct in the passage through the Site of Community Importance (SCI) “Serra do Careón”. The latter was designed to avoid impacting on a specific area where the “santolina melidensis” plant species is found, which is considered a protected species.

ACCIONA has also built several overpasses and underpasses along the route, some of which have been specifically designed for wildlife, contributing to the transversal permeability of the highway and the preservation of local biodiversity.

The new A-54 highway is a key element in the cohesion of the Galician hinterland, guaranteeing efficiency and capacity in regional transport, efficiently linking the cities of Lugo and Santiago de Compostela with a high-capacity road.
