ACCIONA celebrates the arrival of the tunnel boring machine at the Palos de la Frontera station on Madrid’s “Gran Diagonal” Line 11.

ACCIONA, together with its partners Dragados and Rover, today completed excavation from the new Madrid Río station to Palos de la Frontera, where the extension will connect to Line 3 of the Madrid Metro network. A total of 1,614 meters of tunnel were excavated in 71 days, at an average rate of 22.7 meters per day.

The milestone, achieved by the 1,500-ton tunnel boring machine, marks significant progress on the extension of Madrid Metro Line 11, a future transport link between the southwest and northeast of the Spanish capital.

Excavation work began on June 26, passing beneath sections of the M-30 ring road, the Pasillo Verde railway corridor and Metro Line 3.

The extension of the existing Line 11 will help relieve pressure on other lines in the network. It will also improve cross-city mobility between different neighborhoods, providing an innovative transportation solution that promotes sustainability and efficient connectivity.
