  • Final concrete pour creates a continuous bridge deck between New Westminster and Surrey in British Columbia

ACCIONA, as part of Fraser Crossing Partners, has reached a milestone on the Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project with the completion of the final concrete pour connecting the main span to the North Approach in New Westminster. This achievement creates a single, continuous bridge deck across the Fraser River between New Westminster and Surrey, one of the final structural steps before the bridge opens to traffic later this month.

“Connecting the two sides of the bridge represents an extraordinary moment for the entire project team,” said Carlos Planelles, Managing Director, ACCIONA North America Infrastructure. “It reflects years of planning, innovation, and teamwork to deliver a safer, more resilient link between New Westminster and Surrey. This is an important step toward opening a bridge that will serve people and communities for generations.”

With the bridge deck now fully connected, the new bridge spans approximately 1235 metres with cable-supported spans totalling approximately 570 metres.

To achieve perfect alignment between the approach and the main span, crews adjusted the tensioning of stay cables to fine-tune the bridge geometry — accurate to within a tenth of a millimeter. Once aligned, steel segments were bolted together, followed by installation of floor beams and deck panels, and the final concrete pour unifying the entire deck surface.

“This milestone is a testament to the precision, collaboration, and commitment of our teams,” added Planelles. “Every stage of construction has been guided by our shared goal to deliver infrastructure that will stand the test of time — both in quality and in sustainability.”

The Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project is being delivered by Fraser Crossing Partners, a joint venture between Aecon and ACCIONA, selected by the Province of British Columbia to design, build, and partially finance the new bridge. The project includes the construction of a new four-lane cable-stayed bridge connecting Surrey and New Westminster, as well as the design and construction of connecting roadways, grade separation on Highway 17, and the removal of the existing bridge — all aimed at improving safety, reliability, and regional connectivity.
