ACCIONA and its local partner BRK signed today a concession contract to provide basic sanitation services in 153 municipalities and a district in the state of Pernambuco in northeast Brazil. The 35-year agreement includes an investment of BRL 15.4 billion (€2.68 billion) to expand and modernize the region’s water supply and urban sanitation infrastructure.

The signing took place in the city of Recife and was attended by José Manuel Entrecanales, chairman and CEO of ACCIONA; the governor of the state of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra; as well as other local authorities and members of the consortium.

The project will improve access to treated water and to wastewater collection and treatment services for more than eight million residents, helping to raise quality of life in a number of areas across the state: the Recife metropolitan region; the Agreste, the Sertão and the Zona da Mata areas; and the Fernando de Noronha archipelago.

ACCIONA and BRK will manage the water supply and sanitation services in these municipalities, including water distribution and wastewater treatment. The contract includes improvement targets aimed at reducing leaks and ensuring continuity of supply.

The project is aligned with Brazil’s New Legal Framework for Sanitation, which aims to expand access to drinking water and sewerage services across the country.

The Pernambuco contract is ACCIONA’s third water project in Brazil in the last two years, following the award of sewerage services in 48 municipalities in the state of Paraná and urban sanitation services in eight municipalities in Espirito Santo.

In addition to Line 6 of the São Paulo subway, one of the largest infrastructure projects in Latin America, with a pledged investment of over R$19 billion (€1.97 billion), the company has developed other key projects in the country, such as Terminal 2 at the Port of Açu (in Rio de Janeiro) and the transformation of the historic Júlio Prestes Station (in São Paulo) into a world-class concert venue.

Recently, the São Paulo City Council awarded ACCIONA the contract to build the road section between Avenida Jornalista Roberto Marinho and Rodovia dos Imigrantes, one of the country’s main logistics arteries and a key link between the city and the São Paulo coast.
