  • The first project will have an installed capacity of 20MW and a two-hour storage duration, and it will be located near the 50MWp Bolarque photovoltaic plant
  • The second one will have an installed capacity of 13MW and a two-hour storage duration, and it will be built near the 22MW El Cuadrón wind farm

ACCIONA Energía will install two new battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Cuenca and Palencia, Spain, with commissioning scheduled for late 2027.

The first project will have an installed capacity of 20MW and a two-hour storage duration, and it will be located near the 50MWp Bolarque photovoltaic plant in the municipality of Villalba del Rey (Cuenca).

The second one will have an installed capacity of 13MW and a two-hour storage duration, and it will be built near the 22MW El Cuadrón wind farm, located in the municipalities of Hornillos de Cerrato and Torquemada (Palencia).

Battery energy storage systems play a critical role in integrating renewable energy into the electricity system by managing the intermittency of sources such as solar and wind power while helping to stabilise the grid. They also reduce dependence on fossil fuels and strengthen the security of the national electricity supply.

ACCIONA Energía has a well-established track record in the development of energy storage solutions. In Spain, the company was a pioneer, commissioning the country's first hybrid battery storage system integrated with a grid-connected wind farm in 2017 in Barásoain (Navarre). More recently, in 2024, it installed an energy storage system using second-life batteries from electric vehicles at its Extremadura III photovoltaic complex in Almendralejo (Badajoz).

Internationally, the company has established a strong presence in energy storage through large-scale projects such as Cunningham in Texas (United States), one of the largest battery energy storage systems connected to the Texas electricity grid, with an installed capacity of 190MW/380MWh. It is also constructing a 200MW/1GWh battery integrated with the Malgarida photovoltaic plant in Chile's Atacama Desert and recently announced the construction of another 196MW/980MWh energy storage project at the El Romero photovoltaic plant, also in Chile, which is expected to enter operation by the end of 2027.
