ACCIONA ended 2024 with 99.6% of its investment aligned with sustainable business and economic activities, as defined by the European Union’s taxonomy. The company invested almost €2.78 billion (-11%) in 2024, mainly through ACCIONA Energía (€1.54 billion) and its Infrastructure division (€898 million). ACCIONA also reinforced the social impact of its various businesses with more than 300 action plans that benefited 1.9 million people.
The development of the company's investment in sustainable activities in recent years has allowed it to reach a 90.57% share of revenue aligned with the taxonomy last year. Over the last four years, ACCIONA has managed to increase this share by 40 basis points, demonstrating its commitment to leading the provision of sustainable solutions in key sectors such as energy, transport and water management.
In terms of decarbonization, the company reduced its Scope 1 emissions (direct emissions from fuel consumption) and Scope 2 emissions (indirect emissions from purchased energy) by 6%, on a like-for-like basis compared to 2023, to 208,431 tonnes of CO2.
ACCIONA doubled its investment in electrified machinery last year (+93%) and replaced 1.75 million liters of diesel fuel with HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil), a renewable synthetic fuel obtained from vegetable oil waste that cuts CO2 emissions by 90%.
In line with its regenerative purpose, ACCIONA volunteered to plant 273,761 trees last year so as to improve the planet with nature-based solutions. This adds to the tree planting carried out as part of the environmental action programs linked to the company's projects, which involved the restoration of more than 4,000 hectares and the planting of another 104,089 trees, 460,880 shrubs and 195,139 flowers.
ACCIONA generated 26,708GWh of renewable energy in 2024, which prevented 14.4 million tonnes of CO2 and improved the energy efficiency of its operations by 8.7% in terms of tonnes of CO2 released per million euros of turnover.
TANGIBLE BENEFIT
In 2024, ACCIONA reinforced its positive social impact with more than 300 action plans linked to its projects, which have benefited about 1.9 million people in the areas influenced by the company's activities.
These initiatives have been developed in 33 countries, covering various aspects, with a particular focus on job creation and the improvement of living conditions (61.5%), as well as the protection of the environment and biodiversity (21.8%).
As of the end of the year, ACCIONA’s workforce consisted of 66,021 people (+14.1%) of 163 nationalities. The company is pursuing its diversity programs to ensure an inclusive work environment. To align the corporate culture with ACCIONA's mission, 12.5% of the workforce’s variable remuneration is linked to sustainability targets.
The volume of purchases from 30,029 suppliers amounted to €8.4 billion (+9%), in addition to €5.24 billion through Nordex. The ESG risk management program in the supply chain, implemented since 2023, made it possible last year to have an updated risk map for more than 90% of procurement spending.
GREEN FINANCING
New sustainable financing issuance during the year amounted to €2.53 billion, bringing the total to €12.08 billion, 81% of gross corporate debt. In 2023, ACCIONA's Sustainable Impact Finance Framework introduced an innovative element, whereby it achieves discounts on financing through social initiatives that have an additional impact on associated projects’ surroundings. In 2024, notable examples include the acciona.org foundation’s “Light at Home Amazonia” program, which has extended access to electricity services through photovoltaic solutions for more than 100 Peruvian communities, and the development of decarbonization plans for farmers near the MacIntyre wind farm in Australia.
In 2024, ACCIONA obtained a rating of 86 in the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) of the S&P rating agency, making it one of the leading electric utilities in terms of sustainability in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). ACCIONA's sustainability performance has also been evaluated by other rating agencies, including CDP (A List), Sustainalytics (18.7 Low Risk), MSCI (AA) and ECOVADIS (Platinum Medal).
The accredited figure for investment in innovation projects reached €334.2 million (+16.3%) in 2024, with a total of 134 initiatives focused on the development of sustainable and regenerative solutions in the various sectors in which the company operates.
The effort to deploy an open innovation strategy through the I'mnovation program stands out, enabling the development of 16 pilot projects with startups and technology centers to address business challenges, primarily regarding digitalization, artificial intelligence and Big Data solutions.
