ACCIONA strengthens the climate resilience of rail infrastructure through RAIL4EARTH

The company will develop and validate innovative solutions to strengthen the resilience of rail infrastructure to climate change.

ACCIONA is participating in RAIL4EARTH, a European research and innovation project funded by Horizon Europe and developed as part of Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking, Europe’s largest rail research and development initiative. The project aims to develop and demonstrate new technologies that will contribute to a more sustainable, efficient and resilient rail system in the face of the effects of climate change.

The project began in March 2026 and will run until September 2028, with a subsequent phase planned through 2030 to validate the solutions under real-world conditions. RAIL4EARTH brings together 73 European organizations, including infrastructure managers, rail operators, construction companies, universities and technology centers, which are collaborating to develop innovative solutions to transform rail transportation.

In this context, ACCIONA will bring its expertise in the design and development of solutions to improve the resilience of rail infrastructure. The company will design and validate an advanced infrastructure monitoring system and develop sustainable mitigation measures to reduce the impact of extreme weather events.

ACCIONA will also contribute to the development of circular economy solutions by researching new materials with recycled components for rolling stock, promoting more efficient use of resources and greater sustainability in the rail sector.

RAIL4EARTH

RAIL4EARTH is part of phase two of Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking program, which helps drive the development of technologies to advance toward a more sustainable, digital and resilient European rail system. Its main areas of focus include climate change adaptation, energy efficiency, the circular economy, and innovation in infrastructure and rolling stock.
