  • The Galicia chapter of the Spanish Institution of Civil Engineers has also recognized ACCIONA for its work on the A-54 expressway between Melide and Palas de Rei

ACCIONA has received the San Telmo Award for Galicia’s Best Project (2024–2025) for the Environmental Dredging of the O Burgo estuary. The project was delivered through a joint venture with MAB (Matías Arrom Biblioni).

Granted by the Galicia chapter of the Spanish Institution of Civil Engineers (Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos de Galicia), the award recognizes the project’s technical, environmental, and social importance. With an investment of €32 million, the work removed nearly 650,000 m³ of contaminated sediment accumulated over decades, supporting environmental recovery of the estuary, the restoration of shellfish beds, and improved water quality.

The project included selective environmental dredging, controlled management and treatment of the dredged material, and its safe confinement in a dedicated facility built for this purpose. Work was carried out by dividing the estuary into 19 areas, removing more than 550,000 m³ of material and restoring more than 150,000 m³ of channel sands for reuse at Santa Cristina Beach and in shellfish-bed restoration—helping improve both water quality and seabed conditions.

ACCIONA also received recognition for construction of the A-54 expressway between Melide and Palas de Rei. The 11.7-kilometer section, with a €100 million budget, strengthens the strategic corridor linking Lugo and Santiago de Compostela by improving road safety, shortening travel times, and supporting territorial cohesion across Galicia.

PREVIOUS AWARDS

The award adds to other honors ACCIONA has received from the Galicia chapter of the Spanish Institution of Civil Engineers in previous editions. In 2022–2023, the company was recognized for the Os Praceres wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Pontevedra. Earlier, in 2017, it received the same recognition for the AC-14 expressway and A Coruña’s Third Ring Road, highlighting their technical complexity and contribution to improved mobility.
