ACCIONA and its project partners have celebrated the opening of the Tseung Kwan O desalination plantopens in a new tab in Hong Kong in a ceremony attended by Ricky Lau, Permanent Secretary for Development, and Roger Wong, Water Supplies Director, among other personalities, together with a delegation from ACCIONA headed by Manuel Manjón, CEO of the Water Division.

Together with Jardine Engineering Corporation Limited and China State Construction Engineering Limited, ACCIONA was selected to design, build, operate and maintain the first phase of the Tseung Kwan O desalination plant in Hong Kong. The plant entered service at the end of 2023 with a production capacity of 135,000 cubic metres per day to cover approximately 5% of Hong Kong's total freshwater demand (corresponding to approximately 850,000 people). The desalination plant uses reverse osmosis technology, enabling it to meet the challenges of climate change such as low rainfall in the area.

The opening ceremony was organised alongside an open day to present the plant’s facilities to the 1,600+ people who attended the event. The participants were also able to taste the desalinated water produced at the plant and to see the transformation process at first hand.

Alongside these activities, a photo exhibition titled "Dongjiang River Water Supply to Hong Kong" was organised to raise public awareness of the history, development and significance of water supplies in the area.
