ACCIONA, as part of a consortium, has begun producing concrete caissons for the Ravenna Breakwater project in Italy, marking the first time the company has deployed the Kugira II floating caisson dock.

Following the completion of the preparatory work, including equipment commissioning and assembly of the formwork system, the project has entered the production phase. Work is currently progressing with the start of the fifth caisson, out of a total of 18 planned units.

These large-scale structures measure more than 50 meters in length and weigh approximately 9,000 metric tons each, underscoring the operational capabilities of the new floating caisson dock.

In parallel, ground improvement works using gravel columns are moving forward, with 12,000 columns already completed, alongside the delivery of granular materials from Croatia for the breakwater foundation layer.

For the first time, ACCIONA is producing caissons using both of its operational floating caisson docks: Kugira I, located in Valencia, and Kugira II. This reinforces the company’s industrial capabilities in marine infrastructure projects.

The start of production with Kugira II, together with the simultaneous operation of both docks, marks a milestone in the development of ACCIONA’s in-house construction capabilities and consolidates its position in highly complex marine infrastructure.

KUGIRA II

Kugira II is one of ACCIONA’s specialized in-house assets for the construction of reinforced concrete caissons for port infrastructure. This type of floating dock enables large-scale structures to be built directly in the marine environment, supporting the delivery of major port works and reducing the need to transport components from other locations.

With its deployment in Ravenna, ACCIONA is expanding its operational capacity in complex marine infrastructure and strengthening its commitment to in-house solutions for technically demanding projects.
