Located at Barásoain (Navarra, Spain), the site has five 3-MW wind turbines of ACCIONA Windpower technology, the most powerful designed by the company.

Three of the wind turbines are mounted on steel towers and two on concrete towers. This allows us to test both materials on the same site under different wind conditions.

The heights are 92 and 95.5 meters for the steel towers and 100 meters for the concrete ones. In both cases, the rotor diameter is 116 meters.

Under construction since 2012, the start-up of the installation took place in February 2013.

Its experimental nature does not prevent it from sending a considerable amount of energy to the grid. It produces an average 34 GWh per year, equivalent to the electricity consumption of 12,000 homes.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Location: Barásoain, Navarra (Spain).
  • Capacity: 15 MW.
  • Wind turbine: ACCIONA Windpower AW116/3000.
  • Tower: steel (3 - 92 and 95,5m) and concrete (2 - 100m).
  • Start-up: 2013.
  • Owner: ACCIONA.

KEY FIGURES

  • The installation is used to test the AW3000 wind turbines that ACCIONA Windpower installs all over the world.
  • It allows a comparison of the performance of the wind turbine with steel and concrete towers..
  • Despite its essentially experimental nature, it produces clean energy equivalent to the consumption of 12,000 homes.
