The project consisted of burying 4.2 km of the M-30 ring road in Madrid, between the Paseo de Santa María de la Cabeza and the junction with the Carretera de Valencia (A-3), close to Conde de Casal.

The route runs under the Arganzuela and Tierno Galván parks, preventing congestion at the Nudo Sur. These works will free up traffic moving towards the Valencia highway (A-3) and to the east, avoiding traffic travelling to the Andalusia highway (A-4) between the Toledo highway (A-42) and the Avenida del Mediterráneo (A-3).

ACCIONA constructed the north tunnel of the south bypass using “Dulcinea”, the world’s largest EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) tunnel boring machine (at the time of construction) with a 15.62 metre diameter. The tunnel interior has three 3.50-metre lanes, 0.50 metre hard shoulders and 0.70 metre pavements.
