The COMECOCO2 project has been launched with the aim of validating an efficient and competitive system for producing renewable methanol, offering an alternative to current processes based on biomass gasification or biogas reforming.

The combustion of fossil fuels is one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in the transport sector. In order to reduce these emissions, it is essential to promote the use of sustainable fuels—such as green methanol—which stands out for its low carbon footprint, ease of storage, and versatility. In response to this need, COMECOCO2 will employ innovative technologies and new materials to improve performance and reduce reliance on critical raw materials in the synthesis of green methanol, with a focus on its direct application in maritime transport.

More specifically, COMECOCO2 aims to develop a co-electrolysis system that uses CO₂ captured from the biogas stream of a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), along with steam generated from reclaimed water from the same facility. This will produce a synthesis gas, which will then be converted into methanol using an advanced catalytic reactor. The valorisation of WWTP by-products and the elimination of critical raw materials ensure the sustainability of the methanol produced, while also increasing the circularity of the wastewater treatment sector.

ACCIONA is participating in the COMECOCO2 project with other 11 partners. With a budget of nearly 4 million euros, the project is co-funded under the Misiones de Ciencia e Innovación - Transmisiones call, in the framework of the Programa de Transferencia y Colaboración del Plan Estatal de Investigación Científica, Técnica y de Innovación 2024-2027.
