ACCIONA strengthens presence in Portugal with contract for drinking water treatment plant in El Alentejo

ACCIONA has built a dozen wastewater treatment plants and four drinking water treatment plants in Portugal, which together handle more than 450,000 m3 per day and serve a population of two million - nearly one-fifth of the total population.

ACCIONA, a global leader in renewable energy, infrastructure and water services, has won a contract to expand the Monte da Rocha water treatment plant in Ourique, in the south of the Alentejo district of Portugal. ACCIONA, with a 70% share, is the leader of the joint venture with the Lucios group that will be responsible for the project.

The contract is worth 3.5 million euros. The expanded plant with have a capacity of 6,400 m3 per day and cover the drinking water needs of an estimated 35,000 people. ACCIONA will take care of the equipment, power, automation and commissioning, while Lucios will perform the civil engineering work.

ACCIONA Agua has an established presence in Portugal. It has built a dozen wastewater treatment plants and four drinking water treatment plants, which together handle more than 450,000 m3 per day and serve about two million people - nearly one-fifth of the total population of Portugal.

Monte da Rocha is ACCIONA's fifth drinking water treatment plant in Portugal. Its predecessors, the Alcantarilha, Balsemão, Pinhão and Lapela plants, are capable of processing 300,000 m3 per day to provide the water for an estimated 1.3 million people. The Alcantarilha plant is the biggest; it supplies the drinking water for the Algarve area, a population of 1,050,000 people, with a capacity of 259,200 m3 per day. The foremost wastewater treatment plants ACCIONA has built in Portugal are the Vendas Novas Wastewater Treatment Plant 86 kilometres from Lisbon, the Alcácer do Sal Wastewater Treatment Station south of Lisbon, the Vila Real plant and the Albufeira plant.
