- The Cotoperí project has had a significant positive impact on the local economy and employment, creating more than 600 direct and indirect jobs during construction.
The Vicepresident of the Dominican Republic, Raquel Peña, today inaugurated Cotoperí Solar (162.6MWp), the largest photovoltaic complex in Central America and the Caribbean, located in Guaymate, La Romana.
The ceremony was attended by the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos; the President of ACCIONA, José Manuel Entrecanales; the Executive President of JMMB Dominican Republic, Juan José Melo; and the CEO of Grupo Pais, Juan Carlos País.
Made up of three solar plants, Cotoperí Solar will generate 286GWh of clean energy annually, preventing over 210,000 tons of CO₂ emissions – equivalent to planting more than 5.5 million trees.
ACCIONA Energía holds a 51% majority stake in the project. The remaining 49% is held by Cotosolar Holding, which includes the JMMB Sustainable Energy Fund (FES) managed by JMMB Funds, Grupo Pais, and other minority investors.
The Cotoperí project has had a significant positive impact on the local economy and employment, creating more than 600 direct and indirect jobs during construction.
In addition, Cotoperí Solar has implemented a series of social initiatives to foster local development and improve quality of life, benefiting more than 3,500 people living near the complex. These initiatives include the creation of a local employment pool prioritizing the hiring of local workers, training programs in technical skills and entrepreneurship, and road safety awareness campaigns for workers and residents in the area.
Together with the Dominican organization Centro Arcoíris and the foundation acciona.org, the Cotoperí project is also promoting improved access to water and sanitation in the neighbourhoods of Bella Vista and Villa Penca, in the municipality of Bajos de Haina, benefiting more than 4,500 people.
Cotoperí Solar is the second photovoltaic project completed by ACCIONA Energía in the Dominican Republic, following the commissioning of Calabaza I (58MWp) in 2023. The company is also currently building the Pedro Corto solar plant (82.69MWp), in partnership with Grupo Pais, further strengthening its renewable energy portfolio in the country.
From their side, Grupo País and JMMB Fondo de Energía Sostenible (FES) continue to invest in renewable energy generation projects in the Dominican Republic that, together, exceed 710MWp of installed capacity, reaffirming their role as key contributors to the country’s energy transition. The participation of JMMB FES's in this project underscores the commitment of its institutional investors to ensuring that the savings of Dominican workers are directed towards initiatives that promote sustainable energy and energy efficiency.
In infrastructure, ACCIONA is currently building the Eastern Aqueduct of Santo Domingo, which will improve the water supply for 850,000 people, as well as the runway of the Cabo Rojo International Airport in Pedernales.
