  • TOURISM: The new museum, managed by the Andalusian regional government, expands the city’s cultural attractions, bringing to light the Berber peoples’ legacy

Amazigh Space, a new museum showcasing the influence of the Berber peoples in Al-Andalus (medieval Muslim Spain) from the year 711 through the Nasrid Kingdom period (1238–1492), opened this weekend in Granada, southern Spain.

The Amazigh—meaning “free people” in their native language, Tamazight—are the indigenous peoples of North Africa.

ACCIONA Cultura was responsible for executing the museum project, which includes museography, scenography, content integration and the production of audiovisual pieces.

Located in the Carmen de los Porcel archaeological site, near the Alhambra, the new museum brings together archaeological artifacts, jewelry and everyday objects, with the aim of introducing visitors to the historical Berber legacy.

The museum—covering 162m², including an ancient Nasrid tower—brings together pieces from the Dr. Leila Mezian Foundation, the Jorge Dezcallar Collection and the Board of Trustees of the Alhambra.

The project’s technical complexities included the diversity of the collection, featuring artifacts of various sizes, materials and characteristics, ranging from an Amazigh-era door to small-scale jewelry, as well as the need to respect the building’s unique architecture.

The exhibition is organized around five themes: North Africa, the Berbers and Al-Andalus, jewelry, daily life and architecture.

It combines traditional graphic displays with more innovative audiovisual resources that provide context for the collections, using technology as a subtle thread connecting contemporary audiences with the legacy of Al-Andalus.

One of the most striking audiovisual elements is a system of superimposed images that move through the room to the rhythm of a musical composition created specifically for the Amazigh Space.

This project further demonstrates ACCIONA Cultura’s expertise in the development of cultural spaces for highly delicate heritage, providing technical solutions tailored to the conservation, interpretation and public engagement of heritage.
