- NEW REGION: The nonprofit foundation starts its activity in Caldera and Copiapó with a project for 230 households to access clean and affordable electricity
acciona.org, ACCIONA's corporate foundation, has extended its Light at Home rural electrification program to the Atacama region with a project that will initially provide reliable, affordable and clean electricity from photovoltaic systems to 230 families in the municipalities of Caldera and Copiapó.
The nonprofit organization is thus expanding its activity to a second region in Chile, where nearly 1,000 homes still lack access to electricity. The foundation launched its first Light at Home initiative in the country in 2021, in the municipality of Canela (Coquimbo region), and today it is extending its activities to the entire region, benefiting more than 800 families.
The program provides power to isolated homes through the installation of residential photovoltaic systems, which guarantee stable and reliable access to electricity, allowing for lighting and the connection of essential appliances such as refrigerators, televisions, radios and fans.
To ensure the program's long-term sustainability, acciona.org has established a management model that guarantees the maintenance of systems and the replacement of parts through affordable contributions from users. In Chile, this model has been adapted to local conditions and fee management has been optimized through Banco Estado's Caja Vecina branches. This optimization improves accessibility and reduces administrative barriers for users.
Light at Home aims to improve people's living conditions in key aspects such as health, education and the development of productive activities. By providing a stable supply of electricity, it strengthens the social fabric, boosts local economic development and helps reduce regional inequalities. In addition, by replacing diesel generator-based solutions, it reduces dependence on fossil fuels and significantly reduces polluting emissions, making a positive impact on these communities’ environment.
Since its implementation in Chile, the Light at Home program has improved the quality of life of more than 2,600 people in 160 communities, facilitating access to a reliable electricity service that drives social and economic development in rural communities.
