• Very conditioned: The ACCIONA team had to compete with a prototype loaned by the race after being left without its car due to the serious collision suffered last Thursday
  • Reaction: In just 24 hours the team managed to configure the organization's test car from scratch and with Carlos Sainz still convalescing, managed to get into the grand finale
  • Final stretch: The ten teams will return to the competition in September in the two final races in Antofagasta (Chile) and Punta del Este (Uruguay)

The ACCIONA | SAINZ XE Team was unable to complete the final of the second Island X Prix of Sardinia after suffering a breakdown with the test car provided by the organization.

The ACCIONA team's participation has been greatly marked by the serious impact suffered by Carlos Sainz last Thursday in the first of the two Sardinia races, which deprived him of his own car.

The motor-racing team was able to return to competition thanks to the organization's loan of one of its test prototypes and the team's engineers and mechanics ability to get it up to speed from scratch in record time.

Under these conditions, with a new vehicle and Carlos still in pain, the duo of Sainz and Sanz managed to qualify for the final after successfully completing the two qualifications, even setting the fastest time in one of them, and a semi-final in which they sealed their pass with a second place.

The ACCIONA | SAINZ XE Team is very penalized in the dispute for the final title of the two races in Sardinia, where it was unable to score in both finals due to issues unrelated to their sporting performance.

CLIMATE AWARENESS

The ten Extreme E teams raced in an environment that reflects climate change’s direct impact on the ecosystem of the Italian island. The Odyssey 21 cars – the official 100% electric off-road SUVs –  took on a racetrack marked by extreme aridity, aggravated by the high temperatures that global warming entails.

The two Island X Prix brought motorsport spectators closer to an environment affected by drought and the constant risk of wildfires. In July 2021 alone, Italy broke its all-time wildfire record with 13,000 outbreaks that burned down a total of 20,000 hectares.

With its participation at the head of the ACCIONA | SAINZ XE Team, ACCIONA seeks to support Extreme E to raise awareness of the threat of climate change in different parts of the planet and the resulting need to fight it by accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy.

ACCIONA thus strengthens its support for electric mobility, demonstrating its reliability and competitiveness in one of the most demanding motorsport competitions in the world. The company also reinforces its social commitment to sustainable development, gender equality and the fight against climate change through mass sport events.

TWO FINALS

After the double event in Sardinia, Extreme E is heading to the final part of the championship. The race will make the jump for the first time to Latin America with two races that will decide the outcome of this second season.

The first, the Copper X Prix, will be held on September 24th and 25th in Antofagasta (Chile). The theme of the race will be the responsible use of minerals, a non-renewable resource that is key to the development of many industries, including electric vehicles.

The second season will conclude in Uruguay, at the Energy X Prix (November 26th-27th) in Punta del Este.
