For the third year running, ACCIONA has once again won the title of “greenest” electric utility in the world, according to the “New Energy Top 100 Green Utilities” ranking published every year by Energy Intelligence, a specialist independent consultant in energy markets.

The ranking, which has just been made public in its sixth edition, combines the evaluation of CO2 emissions indexes of companies and their installed renewable capacity. ACCIONA continues to be the first pure player in renewable technologies to hold the world leadership in the classification drawn up by the North American company.

The 100 companies that make up the ranking represent almost 55% of electric power generation worldwide. Most of the companies in the Top 10 are European – five – together with three Chinese and two US firms. After ACCIONA, the greenest utilities are NextEra Energy (US), China General Nuclear, Iberdrola (Spain), E.On (Germany), EDP (Portugal), Invenergy (US), China Goudian, Enel (Italy) and China Three Georges.

Among other conclusions, the EI Top 100 Green Utilities report shows that CO2 emissions from the companies on the list were below 500 kg/MWh last year (496 kg/MWh, to be precise) for the first time since the ranking was launched in 2012. It also reveals that the Top 100 added 34 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable capacity in 2016 and 4 GW of nuclear power. Most of the new renewable capacity was from companies from China (56%) and the US (22%).

In contrast, the fossil-fuel-based capacity of these companies fell by 44 GW, mainly due to divestments in Europa (65 GW) and the US (18 GW), more than the 38 GW of fossil-fuel-based capacity installed in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
