• The show will be projected onto the façade of the Raxoi Palace, which will act as a spectacular screen for a multimedia story about the tradition of Santiago and the inseparable connection between the Way of St James and the city
  • The event will be ‘carbon neutral’, meaning that the CO2 emissions linked to the show will be calculated and offset by a clean energy project. The final emissions balance will be zero

ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño (APD) has been chosen to put on the “Fuegos del Apóstol” audio-visual and fireworks show as the highlight of the festivities held in honour of the patron saint of Santiago de Compostela, which take place each year in the Galician capital. APD has created a multimedia show that combines audio-visual projections with 3D effects, music, lighting effects and fireworks. The figure of the patron saint looking down on the square, the traditional Galician music group Cantigas e Agarimos accompanied by spectacular lighting and fire will make a unique setting, focusing on the tradition of St James and the history of the city of Santiago de Compostela.

More than 5,000 spectators are expected to watch the show live, which will last for approximately 30 minutes. It will be projected onto the façade of Raxoi Palace in Obradoiro Square on the night of 24 July, beginning at 11:30pm.

The audio-visual production uses latest-generation technologies to provide quality in excess of 4K, equivalent to over four million pixels of resolution. To do that, ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño will use nine video projectors with 22,000 lumens each, 18 mobile spotlights and four sound towers with a total power of 50,000W.

Furthermore, the fireworks display will use a total of 6,015 triggered effects and 366 kg of gunpowder. APD will once again use the fireworks company RICASA, a Valencia-based firm specialising in events of this type. The show will also include traditional Galician music in the square, with the special collaboration of the folk group Cantigas e Agarimos.

The tradition of St James and the inseparable union between the Way of St James and the city of Santiago are the focal point of APD’s project, in a narration that begins with the transfer of the Apostle’s remains, the subsequent discovery of the tomb in the Forest of Libredon and the flourishing of the different pilgrimage routes. The arrival of Almanzor’s troops and the burning of the pre-Romanesque church will certainly be one of the most emotional and intense moments. After that, spectators will see the construction of some of the city's most emblematic buildings.

ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño’s project also includes a fireworks display on 31 July, from the steps of the South Campus in Alameda, lasting approximately 18 minutes with a total of 4,984 triggered effects and 443.8 kg of gunpowder, visible from most of the city.

The event will be ‘carbon neutral’ thanks to ACCIONA’s commitment to sustainability in all its activities, meaning that the CO2 emissions linked to the show will be calculated and offset by a clean energy project. The final emissions balance will be zero.

Internationally renowned festivities

This year, the “Fuegos del Apóstol” will be part of 14 days of celebration, from 18 to 31 July, which have been classified as a “Fiesta of International Tourist Interest”. The festivities will turn the streets of Santiago de Compostela into a veritable festival of intercultural diversity, showing the essence of Galician tradition, with activities for all ages.
