- Once finished, the new infrastructure will reduce travel time from 90 to 23 minutes and will transport up to 633,000 passengers daily.
ACCIONA has inaugurated the first six stations of Line 6 (Orange) of the subway in São Paulo (Brazil). They will initially operate Monday to Friday under an assisted operation schedule, with free access for passengers.
The project is part of a public-private partnership (PPP) between the São Paulo State Government and the Linha Universidade concessionaire (whose majority shareholder is ACCIONA), and it is the largest infrastructure project currently underway in Latin America.
Once completed, the line will connect Brasilândia with the São Joaquim station over a distance of 15.3 kilometers, with 15 stations, linking the northern part of the city with the downtown area. In this first phase, the stations João Paulo I, Freguesia do Ó, Santa Marina, Água Branca, SESC-Pompeia and Perdizes have been opened to the public.
Line 6 is expected to carry 633,000 passengers daily, reducing travel time from 90 minutes by bus to just 23 minutes by subway, which will significantly improve mobility and quality of life for residents.
“The launch of Line 6 marks the fulfillment of the commitment ACCIONA made to São Paulo in 2019 and represents a transformative legacy for the city. For thousands of families, it is not just an infrastructure project, but a real opportunity to improve their time, their work and their prospects,” said José Manuel Entrecanales, president and CEO of ACCIONA.
The line will feature state-of-the-art trains with capacity for up to 2,044 passengers and a maximum speed of 80Km/h. In the future, they will operate using the CBTC GoA4 system (fully automated, driverless operation), ensuring efficiency and safety.
Manufactured by Alstom from stainless steel, the trains are lighter and more energy-efficient than older models, incorporating passenger counting systems, dynamic line maps, monitors, video surveillance and the most advanced safety systems.
During the project’s implementation, ACCIONA has supported more than 60,000 people through social programs focused on education, employability, gender equality and human rights. These initiatives demonstrate the company’s commitment to leaving a positive social legacy in the communities served by the project.
STRATEGIC COUNTRY
ACCIONA has been operating in Brazil for nearly 30 years, developing major infrastructure projects in several states across the country.
In addition to Line 6, the company has carried out other key projects, such as Terminal 2 at the Port of Açu (Rio de Janeiro) and the transformation of the historic Júlio Prestes Station in São Paulo into a world-class concert venue.
Recently, the São Paulo City Council awarded ACCIONA the contract to build the road section between Avenida Jornalista Roberto Marinho and Rodovia dos Imigrantes, one of the country’s main logistics arteries and a key link between the city and the São Paulo coast.
In addition, the Paraíba Water and Sewerage Company awarded ACCIONA the contract for water and sewer services in 85 municipalities in the Paraíba region, in northeastern Brazil. The contract, structured as a public-private partnership, provides for the delivery of these services through 2039 to an estimated population of 1.7 million, with an investment of €724 million.
This project adds to other similar contracts in Paraná, Espírito Santo and Pernambuco under Brazil’s National Basic Sanitation Plan.
