  • The project significantly improves road safety and reduces transit times within the city of Chimbote by 30 to 45 minutes

ACCIONA, in partnership with Ferrovial, has completed the construction of a 29.7-kilometer highway that continues the Pan-American Highway through the city of Chimbote, in northern Peru. The new road will improve urban traffic congestion in the municipality and cut the travel time by 65%, reducing the journey from two hours to 40 minutes.

The project required an investment of PEN600 million (€142 million) and was executed over two years and nine months, finishing three months ahead of schedule. The works also included the construction of three roundabouts, eight underpasses, auxiliary roads, and the replacement of a large network of irrigation systems.

Thanks to this new section, travel times within Chimbote have been reduced by 30 to 45 minutes, and road safety has improved significantly. Furthermore, the project contributes to better air quality in the city center, as it prevents both light and heavy vehicles from entering the urban area, facilitating smoother traffic flow north and south.

As part of this project, ACCIONA and Ferrovial have launched several initiatives to protect and improve the quality of life for local communities and their surroundings. Among other actions, a training program for farmers has been implemented to promote local employment. Additionally, continuous water supply for crop irrigation has been maintained, and an extensive dust control and mitigation plan was carried out to avoid harming local agricultural operations.

EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE

ACCIONA has extensive experience in the infrastructure market in Peru, where it has been active since 1998, developing large-scale projects.

In April 2024, the company, in partnership with Ferrovial and Sacyr, was awarded the construction and operation of the Lima Peripheral Ring Road concession, a 34.8-kilometer urban toll highway in the metropolitan area of the Peruvian capital, for a duration of 30 years.

In 2022, ACCIONA was awarded the concession contract for the design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of an electricity transmission network that will benefit 1.3 million people between Reque and Nueva Carhuaquero; and Nueva Tumbes and Tumbes in the north of the country. One year later, the company secured another concession contract for the design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of two transmission lines that will benefit 370,000 people between Ica and Poroma in the south of Peru, and Cáclic and Jaén in the north.

The company has also been involved in the construction of a pumping system for the copper ore processing plant of the Antamina project in the Huari province, and in the construction of the new Control Tower at the Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima.

In the water treatment sector, notable projects include the Pachacútec Wastewater Treatment Plant (PTAR), the Talara desalination plant, the La Chira wastewater treatment plant, and the Arequipa treatment plant. Furthermore, it manages the water services for Lima through the Lima Drinking Water and Sewerage Service (Sedapal) and has carried out significant construction works such as the Daniel Alcides Carrión Hospital and the Pucallpa prison.

In February 2022, ACCIONA Energía embarked on its first project in Peru with the construction of the 131.1MW San Juan de Marcona wind farm in the department of Ica.

Additionally, ACCIONA is present in Peru through its foundation, acciona.org, with the aim of providing clean and sustainable energy, drinking water, and other essential infrastructure to low-income individuals living in isolated communities.
