ACCIONA Energía presented yesterday a digital energy calculator to help citizens from the city of Gijón, Spain, measure their energy consumption, improve their energy efficiency, reduce their environmental footprint, and save on their electricity bills.

The online tool, developed as part of the energy services contract with the Gijón City Council – LUCE Gijón – was presented during the Urban Lab session at the Antigua Escuela de Comercio in GIjón. During the workshop, presenters also provided a number of practical recommendations on how to improve energy efficiency at home and optimize the way we consume energy.

The energy calculator is based on a user-friendly form that collects detailed information about the house, such as its dimensions, the characteristics of the electrical equipment, type of lighting and other factors related to energy consumption.  With this data, it calculates the total energy consumption of the house, provides a thorough analysis of its efficiency, and offers recommendations to reduce costs and minimize the environmental impact, such as replacing electrical devices for more efficient ones or changing the contracted power capacity.

The use of this energy calculator, beyond helping to save on electricity bills, allows citizens to understand how factors such as the type of household devices or lighting options influence consumption, to know in detail how they consume energy and to become aware of more efficient and responsible alternatives.

This initiative is part of a series of training and informative events that are being carried out by the LUCE Gijón project with the aim of developing a smart city based on innovation, entrepreneurship, employment, sustainability, and citizen participation as fundamental pillars.

ACCIONA Energía signed an agreement with Gijón City Council in early 2022 to manage the city's energy services for 15 years. The contract includes several measures to promote Gijón’s green energy and digital transition, accelerate decarbonization, the installation of renewable energy sources and storage technologies, the development of energy communities and the generation of opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, job creation and sustainable development in the city.
