  • 194MW: Etana Energy will purchase 580GWh produced by Zen (100MW) and Bergriver (94MW) wind farms for 20 years

ACCIONA Energía will begin construction of two new wind farms totalling 194MW in South Africa in the coming weeks. Etana Energy, a leading energy trader in South Africa, will purchase all the renewable electricity generated by the two wind projects –Zen (100MW) and Bergriver (94MW)– for the first 20 years of operation.

Located between Gouda and Saron in the Western Cape, Zen and Bergriver will produce around 580GWh of renewable electricity per year. This output will supply a range of Etana Energy’s customers, including Growthpoint, the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, Tharisa Minerals, Petra Diamonds and Autocast.

The wind farms will be owned by ACCIONA Energía (51%) and a joint venture between H1 Capital and Chariot Limited (49%), companies specialising in the development of, and investment in, renewable energy projects.

Following financial close on 12 December 2025, construction is expected to commence in the coming weeks, with commissioning scheduled for mid-2027. ACCIONA Energía will carry out the construction, while Nordex, one of Europe’s leading wind turbine manufacturers, will supply the turbines and take over the operation and maintenance of the facilities once completed.

These projects underscore the growing liberalisation of South Africa’s power sector, as private offtakers increasingly source renewable electricity through energy traders like Etana – signalling a shift towards a more open, competitive and diversified energy supply industry.

The electricity supplied through these projects will displace around 600,000 tons of CO₂ emission per year, equivalent to removing more than 225,000 internal combustion engine vehicles from the road, helping to drive the country’s decarbonization efforts.
