• Its primary purpose is to ensure the impermeability of the dam and prevent internal erosion from the flow of water.

ACCIONA has successfully completed the asphalt core of the tailings dam of the Itoiz reservoir, which the company is constructing in Nagore (Navarre). The primary function of the asphalt core is to ensure the impermeability of the dam, giving a degree of flexibility to the dam complex as well as preventing internal erosion from the flow of water.

The project forms part of the Supplementary and Improvement Measures for Environmental Quality included in the environmental impact study for the Itoiz dam project in the provincial community of Navarre. It consists of constructing two tailings dams to ensure a constant level of water in the area around the village of Nagore and downstream from Oroz-Betelu on the Urrobi and Iratí rivers respectively.

ACCIONA is constructing a 32-metre high rock-fill dam. The structure consists of a vertical asphalt core that is approximately 622 metres long and 50 centimetres thick. The dam will supply irrigation for 57,700 hectares with 385 hm3 annually.
