ACCIONA Agua has been awarded the contract for the operation, conservation and maintenance of the Astepe and Dudea Wastewater Treatment Plants in Amorebieta-Etxano, Bizkaia (Biscay province) in northern Spain.
As well as 9 kilometers of wastewater and rainwater piping, the primary network has four main pumping stations - Arriagane, Urritxe, Zubieta and Euba - that channel the wastewater towards a general pumping station in the Astepe industrial park, from where it is sent to the wastewater treatment plant. The Astepe facility is located in the neighborhood of the same name and receives the wastewater generated in more than 90% of the municipality. It has a design flow of 12,000 m3/day, although it currently treats an average 5,520 m3 per day for a population equivalent of 20,000 people.
In addition to this primary network, the contract also covers the operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) at Dudea, a small facility that provides a service to the neighborhood of the same name. Its geographical layout means that it is not possible to send the wastewater to the Astepe WWTP.
It is the second successive time that ACCIONA has renewed the contract for the installations in and around Amorebieta. On this occasion, the service began last April 1st and will run for two years, plus two possible annual extensions for up to 2.7 million euros.
At the end of last year ACCIONA Agua (in consortium with the local company Gaimaz) was awarded the contract for the design, construction and start-up of the variante of the Wastewater Treatment Plant at Sopuerta in Bizkaia to provide a service to more than 3,700 residents, with a construction period of 25 months for a sum of 3.56 million euros. ACCIONA has designed and built around ten WWTPs in the Basque Country – among them the facilities at Aduna, Apraitz (Elgoibar), Alto Oria (Legarreta), Ondarrea and Bergara – with a flow rate of around 200,000 cubic meters per day to serve a population equivalent of more than 300,000 people. It also operates and maintains eight other plants, treating almost 23,000 cubic meters per day, including those at Munguía and Gorliz.
