  • The Broadway Subway Extension Project in Vancouver has been recognized by the Tunnelling Association of Canada

ACCIONA, in consortium with Ghella, has received Canada’s Project of the Year award for the Broadway Subway Project at the World Tunnel Congress 2026 in Montreal, recognizing the scale, complexity and technical excellence of one of British Columbia’s most important rapid-transit investments. The Broadway Subway Project will extend Vancouver’s Millennium Line west from VCC-Clark Station to Arbutus Street, adding 5.7 kilometres of new rapid-transit infrastructure through one of Metro Vancouver’s busiest corridors.

The project includes twin tunnels measuring six metres in diameter, six new underground stations, a 700-metre elevated guideway and supporting facilities required to operate and power the new SkyTrain extension.

The award recognizes the teams advancing the project every day, including tunnelling and engineering specialists, construction crews, technical experts and delivery teams working across the alignment.

Two tunnel boring machines, Elsie and Phyllis, have played a central role in advancing underground construction on the project. Their work has helped support the delivery of a new extension that will strengthen connections between major employment centres, health-care services, innovation and research hubs, educational institutions and growing residential communities.

Once complete, the Broadway Subway Project will provide fast, reliable rapid-transit service along a critical east-west corridor, improving access to jobs, education and services while helping reduce congestion and support more sustainable growth across the region.

The recognition at World Tunnel Congress 2026 reinforces ACCIONA’s presence in Canada and across North America, highlighting the company’s technical capabilities and experience delivering major underground infrastructure in dense urban environments.

The milestone also comes as ACCIONA marks 25 years in Canada, reflecting the company’s long-term commitment to delivering complex infrastructure that supports communities, strengthens mobility and contributes to a more sustainable future.

KEY PROJECTS

ACCIONA has been active in Canada for 25 years and has delivered major public infrastructure projects from coast to coast, including the Site C Clean Energy Project in British Columbia, the Walterdale Bridge in Edmonton, Southeast Stoney Trail in Calgary, Montreal’s A-30 highway, the Herb Gray Parkway in Ontario, and Toronto’s Deep Lake Water Cooling System.

Elsewhere in Metro Vancouver, the company is currently jointly leading construction on the Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project and the Broadway Subway Project, both for the Province of British Columbia. In Ontario, ACCIONA is part of a consortium contracted by Metrolinx to design and build the westward extension of Toronto’s Line 5 Eglinton light rail, adding approximately 9.2 kilometres of track and seven new stations.

ACCIONA operates offices in Toronto and Vancouver and is one of the most active infrastructure contractors in Canada.

The company also owns and operates 460MW of renewable energy across five wind farms in Canada.
