- Global Water Intelligence has awarded ACCIONA Distinctions in the “Desalination Company of the Year” and “Wastewater Project of the Year” categories for the Bahr el-Baqar wastewater treatment plant in Egypt.
Global Water Intelligence (GWI) has announced the winners of the Global Water Awards 2022, which were handed over on 17 May in Madrid as part of the World Water Summit 2022. ACCIONA has been recognised with two Distinctions: “Desalination Company of the Year” and “Wastewater Project of the Year” for the Bahr el-Baqar wastewater treatment plant in Egypt.
The “Desalination Company of the Year” category recognises companies that have made the greatest contribution to the desalination industry worldwide. In 2021, ACCIONA has been a benchmark in this field, being awarded a series of key projects such as the desalination plants in Los Cabos (Mexico) and Jubail 3b (Saudi Arabia). The company has a project portfolio of more than 80 desalination projects in countries such as Chile, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Australia and Spain, among others.
For its part, thanks to the Bahr el-Baqar wastewater treatment plant in Egypt ACCIONA has been awarded a Distinction in the “Wastewater Project of the Year” category. This plant represents a major investment in terms of optimization and care of the environment, as it treats wastewater that is later used for the irrigation of recently-created agricultural land. It has four treatment lines and a capacity of 5.6 million m3/ day, making it one of the biggest wastewater treatment plants in the world and the biggest in Africa.
The GWI awards recognise the greatest achievements of the sector in the previous year, rewarding initiatives and companies that contribute to the development of the water sector through improvements in operational performance, the adoption of innovative technologies and sustainable financial models.
In recent years ACCIONA has figured prominently in the Global Intelligence Water Awards, among them “Best Water Company in the World” in 2010, 2013 and 2017, and “Best Desalination Company” in 2007, 2016 and 2019.
