- The company has organized a variety of activities as part of the airstrip construction project for the country’s ninth international airport
With support from the A&H consortium, ACCIONA has carried out several social initiatives in collaboration with residents of the Pedernales communities, as part of the construction of the airfield for the new international airport in the Dominican Republic, which will serve the Cabo Rojo tourist area.
Over the course of this year, nearly 1,500 residents of the Oviedo community have benefited from programs carried out by the company in areas such as health, education, and sports. Notably, electrical and plumbing systems were upgraded at Los Tres Charcos Elementary School, where classes were often cancelled due to water shortages or inadequate bathroom facilities.
Recreational activities were also held for children, along with the distribution of school supplies in the communities of Tres Charcos and Manuel Goya. In total, more than 150 students received backpacks, notebooks, crayons, insulated bottles, and educational materials to support their continued education.
Additionally, ACCIONA provided multiple free medical service days to the communities, offering specialties such as family medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, gynecology, ophthalmology, and diabetes care. Residents also had access to a pharmacy and a lab for medical testing, along with free eyeglasses for those in need. More than 800 people benefited from these services.
In the area of sports, ACCIONA, in partnership with the A&H consortium and the Provincial Sports Office, organized the Inter-Neighborhood Basketball Tournament for youth and adults. Additionally, in collaboration with the Oviedo Municipal Government, the sports courts in Barrio Nuevo and Tres Charcos were renovated to provide the community with safer, more accessible spaces for recreational and athletic activities.
ACCIONA has been working in the country for over 15 years. Since late last year, as part of the Pedernales airport project, ACCIONA has been promoting a series of social programs in close collaboration with the community, directly addressing its most pressing needs and challenges. The medical outreach campaigns—organized with the support of Fundación Cruz Jiminián and aimed at improving access to basic healthcare—have enabled nearly 1,000 residents to receive specialized medical care. This reflects ACCIONA’s deep and ongoing commitment to the well-being of the local community.
Through these activities, the Company contributes to achieving several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—specifically Goals 3, 4, 6, 10, 11, 12, and 17—focused on health and well-being; quality education; clean water and sanitation; reducing inequalities; building sustainable communities; and forming partnerships to achieve these objectives.
In line with its commitment to creating positive impact in the communities where it operates, ACCIONA—through its foundation acciona.org—signed an agreement this year with the Ministry of Energy and Mines to channel social impact funds into bringing renewable energy to underserved communities and public facilities still lacking access to electricity. To date, the Luz en Casa (“Light at Home”) program has benefited more than 180 households in the province of Pedernales.
EXPERIENCE IN THE COUNTRY
ACCIONA has operated in the Dominican Republic since 2009, developing resilient infrastructure to help tackle some of the country’s key challenges.
In addition to the airfield construction project for the new international airport in Pedernales, in 2016, a consortium led by ACCIONA and local partners was awarded the contract to expand the Eastern Aqueduct of Santo Domingo. Likewise, ACCIONA Airport Services, the company’s airport division, provides ground services in the Dominican Republic to several airlines, including Arajet.
In 2023, ACCIONA Energía launched its first photovoltaic facility in the country. Located in the province of Peravia, the Calabaza I solar plant supplies clean solar energy to more than 54,000 homes. With 58 MWp of installed capacity and more than 106,000 photovoltaic modules, the facility will prevent the emission of approximately 81,000 tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere each year.
This year, ACCIONA Energía and Grupo Pais also launched the Cotoperí solar project, which has become the largest photovoltaic complex in Central America and the Caribbean. With an annual capacity of 276 GWh, the plant is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 200,000 tons annually.
