- In three months, eight caissons have been built and installed, extending the quay’s berthing line by more than 500 meters
ACCIONA has anchored in their final position the eight caissons that will extend the berthing line of the New Container Terminal in the Port of Cádiz.
In just over three months, the eight concrete blocks were built, floated and placed to extend the berthing line at La Galeona (Cádiz) by 510.48 meters, each measuring 63 meters long, 24 meters wide and 20.5 meters deep.
These structures were manufactured by Kugira floating dock and, before being anchored, they remained moored until the foundations on which they would rest were prepared. This foundation was formed by dredging to a depth of -17.5 meters and by a breakwater and gravel screeding to a depth of -16 meters, creating a continuous and uniform bed.
It should also be noted that the structures were built using ecological cement, which reduced CO2 emissions by 30 to 50 percent compared to other conventional materials.
Meanwhile, work continues on filling the enclosure, moving and filling the caissons themselves, and making the connections between them.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The work awarded to ACCIONA for 54.6 million euros is part of the “CADIZ CONTAINER MULTIMODAL TERMINAL AND LAND ACCESS. PHASE II”, a project co-financed by the European Commission.
The contract provides for the extension of the current 510 meters of quay to 1,100 meters of total berthing line. In addition, the forecourt area will be increased by approximately 10 hectares, resulting in a total container terminal area of 40 hectares.
