Waste collection in the eastern area of Madrid

First 100% electrical waste collection lorry in the capital.

The services business of ACCIONA, as part of a joint venture with Valoriza, OHL and Ascan, collects waste in the districts of Hortaleza, Barajas, San Blas-Canillejas, Ciudad Lineal, Vicalvaro, Moratalaz, Salamanca, Chamartín and Retiro, a total of nine districts in the capital, affecting 1.2 million inhabitants.

This contract includes the first 100% electrical waste collection lorry in the capital.

To optimise such service, ACCIONA will include side-loading lorries that will enable:

  • The templates aimed at new 'door-to-door' collection services of glass and paper-cardboard to be reinforced
  • Extend the frequency of the collection of packaging
  • Extend the frequency of the cleaning of containers and the collection of waste.

Key aspects

As part of its commitment to sustainability and efficiency, for this contract ACCIONA has replaced the entire fleet of vehicles used in previous contracts with a new fleet of 100% electric vehicles and 138 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles that minimize environmental pollution in terms of noise, gases and solid particles emitted into the air.

It also highlights the 17 collection trucks compacting side load that facilitate the work of workers and allow reorganizing new tasks to improve the quality of service without increasing costs.

Technology and innovation

Fleet management system

The fleet management system keeps an inventory of urban elements and all human and mechanical resources related to the service, enabling adequate planning and general organisation. This allows us to perfectly control all activities carried out in the municipality and helps to provide the correct justification to the responsible administration.

In addition, this system makes it possible to automate the creation of reports and graphs, and to send them to the managers defined by the organisation.

At the Control Centre, the information received is presented to the user through a Geographic Information System (GIS) and together with a series of reports, enables comparison of the studies and facilitates real-time decision-making.

Monitoring the vehicles used to provide these services is one of the major challenges that ACCIONA and its technology partner have responded to, thanks to the Global Location System (GLS). This acquires data from the different systems and sends it to the incident management platform for further development.

Moreover, it should be noted that, thanks to data modelling and the use of ICT solutions in the provision of these services, it is also possible to provide additional services such as the payment-per-generation systems (PxG).
