The local community will benefit from the removal of level crossings in Cheltenham, Mentone, Edithvale, Bonbeach, Carrum and Seaford, construction of six new stations, as well as construction of a new train stabling facility at Kananook. These projects provide safer separation of trains from traffic, reduce congestion, and improve access to houses, shops and at the beachside suburbs, improved access to the foreshore.
In Carrum, the new station was opened to commuters in February 2020 via the new southern entrance of the Station. Full access to the new station was completed in July. The closure of three level crossings and the reconfiguration of the local road network, including the construction of a new bridge across Patterson River(Karrum Karrum Bridge), and extending a main road through to a major highway under the completed rail bridge, has provided improved and safer access for the local community.
The community of Seaford has benefitted from the removal of the level crossing at Seaford Road with the construction of a rail bridge and the lowering of Seaford Road. Also included in the project scope is upgrades to the pedestrian and cycling paths and the opening of a new playground at the local RF Miles Reserve.
The level crossings at Park and Charman Roads in Cheltenham and Balcombe Road in Mentone were removed in June 2020 and the new station at Mentone opened in July. Cheltenham’s new station was opened to commuters in August.
The new Carrum Promenade connecting the local community to the beach will be open later in 2020.
Early works have begun on the removal of the level crossings at Edithvale Road in Edithvale, Argyle Avenue, Chelsea Road and Swanpool Avenue in Chelsea, and Bondi Road in Bonbeach. The Frankston line will be grade separated with rail under solutions and new stations built at Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach.Thames Promenade will be extended to the Nepean Highway at Chelsea – improving traffic along this stretch of highway.
