CLEAN, NON-POLLUTING ENERGY
Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
1 in 8 people still do not have access to electricity. In order to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, it is necessary to increase the use of renewable energy from 25 % today to 38 % in 2025.
ACCIONA is positioning itself as a key player in addressing the growth in energy demand while curbing the progress of global warming and promoting the transition to a decarbonized energy model.
CLIMATE ACTION
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
The generation and use of energy is responsible for 74 % of total greenhouse gas emissions in the world. This activity is the largest contributor to global warming. Investment in renewable energy, energy efficiency and other low carbon technologies will continue to be essential to meet the new needs of humanity and to minimise their negative impact on the environment.
ACCIONA considers the fight against climate change and its related effects to be a strategic priority. The Company is working to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in order to contribute to the progress of society and respond to the main challenges of sustainable development in the areas of infrastructure, water and energy, leading the transition to a low-carbon economy.
The 60 wind turbines in the wind farm are of ACCIONA Windpower technology, with a rotor diameter of 132 metres, 120-metre-high concrete towers and 3.3 MW of rated capacity. The facility is located in the municipality of San Carlos in the State of Tamaulipas (Mexico).
It produces energy equivalent to the consumption of more than 392,000 households, avoiding the emission of around 421,339 tonnes of CO2 from coal-fired power plants per year.
With this facility, ACCIONA reaches 1,285 MW of renewable energy capacity in Mexico, in the form of seven wind farms totalling 881 MW and one 405-MW photovoltaic plant. The energy produced in San Carlos is used to support long-term purchase agreements (PPAs) for clean energy projects for private clients in the country.

Social initiatives
1,076 BENEFICIARIES
ACCIONA applies the social impact management methodology, through which it manages the social impact of its plants and carries out a series of initiatives to improve living conditions for the Mexican communities located near the San Carlos wind farm. Since 2019 more than 1,000 local people have benefited from the programme, which has a budget of 152,000 euros.
The social actions are aimed at improving infrastructures and people’s well-being. In this respect, the renovation of school buildings and the recycling of waste products generated by the project are carried out. Other measures are also applied to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) on clean water and sanitation.
