Unique project within the Atlantic Highway

The project is a section of the Atlantic Highway, linking La Coruña and Vigo via the Strait of Rande, avoiding a detour of more than 50 km along the estuary.

This is a 1,558 m long bridge consisting of a central bridge and two access viaducts. The two access viaducts are formed by two continuous box girders, one for each roadway, made of prestressed concrete. The total length of the viaducts is 863 metres.

The designers for the project were Florencio del Pozo, Fabrizio de Miranda and Alfredo Passaro. At the time of its construction it was the second longest span in the world for such bridges. In 1979, it won the European Prize for Best Steel Construction.

The central bridge is a cable-stayed steel bridge with a fan cable arrangement and two cable planes, with a central span of 400.14 m and two side spans of 147.42 m. The height above sea level is 863 metres. The height above sea level is 48m. The metal deck has a width of 23.46 m, allowing double circulation in each direction, and an edge of 2.46 m, making it a very slender and light structure. It is suspended from straight cables anchored at its edges and at the heads of the central piers.

The central piers, made of reinforced concrete, have a length of 128 m above sea level and are directly founded without modifying the bedrock.
