The Madrid - Barcelona high-speed line project was part of Spain's high-speed rail development programme.

Section VIII - Length: 14.70 km

Madrid - Zaragoza

The scope of this project involved the construction of six continuous viaducts of multiple post-tensioned spans, all constructed using the incremental launching method. The design speed for all of them was 350 km/h.

The deck construction method was used. The decks of all these viaducts are continuous post-tensioned multi-span bridges. The construction of all of them was carried out by the incremental launching method, pushing precast stones in situ. The fabrication of these corner stones was carried out in the facilities located next to the first abutment of each viaduct. The construction consisted of casting corner stones in a stationary formwork behind the abutment, which are pushed forward with jacks or a friction launching system along the axis of the bridge.

    Subsection 1-A - Length: 8.80 km

    Calatayud - Ricla

The works have consisted of the construction of the complete infrastructure up to the form layer of the 8,800-metre-long subsection 1-A of the Catalayud - Ricla section. This is a platform for double track, which will house the superstructure that will allow trains to run at speeds of up to 350 km/h.

In the autonomous community of Aragon, the most relevant works of this project are the construction of two tunnels called Marivella and Paracuellos, 620 metres and 4,635 metres long respectively.

Both have concrete lining and final sections of 110 m2 and 75 m2. The Miravella tunnel has been excavated in two phases, advance and destruction, with mechanical means and explosives. The Paracuellos tunnel was excavated with tunnel boring machines and a section of 12.40 metres in diameter, with provisional support of trusses, mesh and shotcrete. The rest of the tunnel has been made by advancing and destroying with the use of explosives and support with bolts and gunite.

In addition, a 78-metre-long viaduct has been built over the Perejiles River. The deck is made of precast prestressed concrete beams and has three spans.

The existence of an area without sufficient bearing capacity to support an embankment with a maximum height of 22 metres made it necessary to use drainage wicks to drain the water. On the other hand, the tunnels have been built with micropile umbrellas. These were also used in the Paracuellos tunnel to treat geological faults.

Section XV - Length: 21.00 km

      Madrid - Zaragoza

The scope of the project was the construction of the infrastructure for a high-speed railway line with a total length of 21 km (Madrid - Barcelona - French Border High Speed Line).

The project involved the construction of two interdependent parallel viaducts over the Huerva River and the N-330 road. Both viaducts are continuous multi-span post-tensioned bridges for a design speed of 350 km/h. For their construction, the incremental deck construction and launching method was also used.

      • VIADUCT Nº1: This first viaduct has a double track for the high-speed railway line (width 1,435 mm). The total length of the viaduct is 1,122 m distributed in eighteen (18) sections.
      • VIADUCT Nº2: This second viaduct has a single track for the national railway line (width 1,668 mm). The total length of the viaduct is 1,111 m distributed in eighteen (18) sections.

      TUNNEL

The works consist of the Tapiolés tunnel, in the municipalities of La Secuita and El Callar, with a length of 1.06 kilometres. The two cut-and-cover tunnels are 20 and 86 metres long respectively, and the total length of the tunnel in the mine is 960 metres.

The tunnel section is 100 m2. The New Austrian Method has been used for its execution, and the support has been carried out with trusses and gunning with fibres.

      OVERPASSES AND UNDERPASSES

The works include the construction of 5 overpasses with reinforced concrete slabs. In addition, 4 subways that cross railways or pedestrian crossings, and 3 service crossings that permeabilise the route.

      VIADUCTS

Three viaducts of 664 metres, 384 metres and 80 metres have been built to cross watercourses and streams. The maximum height of the pier on each is 19.50 metres, 13.40 metres and 11 metres. Viaduct 1 was built by pushing the deck from the end abutment. The other two viaducts have a deck made up of precast prestressed beams forming a hyperstatic structure.

The work includes the required drainage, planting, enclosure and concrete channelling for signalling and communications.

        Length: 4.10 km

Sant Joan Despi - Sant Boi de Llobregat

The project consists of the construction of a double-track platform of international gauge for a maximum speed of 150 km/h.

The total length of the section is 4,096 metres and runs from north to south in the province of Barcelona. The main structure within the line is the Sant Boi viaduct (870 metres long) which spans the junction of the C-245 road and the Llobregat river. This viaduct is divided into two different sections.

The project also includes a 2,356-metre cut and cover tunnel built to pass under a major road junction in the area. The tunnel is excavated between screens and under a concrete slab previously constructed at ground level.

        • The first section consists of a mixed concrete and steel viaduct launched from the north abutment. The total length is 340 metres divided into 6 spans: 44 + 4 x 63 + 44 m. The platform is made of two structural steel elements, with a reinforced concrete slab in the middle.
        • The second section is a post-tensioned concrete structure with a total length of 530 metres. It is divided into 11 sections: 40 + 9 x 50 + 40 m.

        Stage I - Length: 8.4 km

        Nudo de Mollet

This is a project whose global scope was the execution of a Railway Junction comprising conventional gauge (1,668 mm), UIC gauge (1,435 mm) lines belonging to the Barcelona - French Border High Speed Line and mixed gauge (both gauges 1,668 mm + 1,435 mm), involving infrastructure and track and railway installation works specific to each gauge, while making its execution compatible with the maintenance of the railway service on the lines affected.

The awarded Project includes the description, definition and assessment of the set of actions corresponding to Project 2, which refers to the doubling of the final section of the Papioi-Mollet line in Iberian gauge as well as the execution of the connecting branches in international gauge between the Vallés corridor and the Barcelona-French border L.A.V. and the connecting branch between Papioi-Mollet and the La Llagosta freight station, in mixed gauge.

The scope of the works carried out included: infrastructure, track superstructure on ballast, catenary installations and safety and communications installations.

A total of 3,608 m of track renewal and 7,969 m of new track were carried out.

          Length: 8.02 km

          Riudellots-C / Joan Torro

This construction project defines and assesses the measures necessary to define an international double track marker with a maximum travel speed of 250 km/h and a minimum speed of 130 km/h.

The total length of the section is 8,025 m. The section runs from north to southeast through the municipal areas of Riudellots de la Selva, Aiguaviva, Fornells de la Selva and Girona, in the province of Girona.

The Project includes the construction of 4 viaducts, 5 overpasses and 2 subways.

The most outstanding features are three of the four structures designed and, in particular, the viaduct that crosses the AP-7 motorway, with some singular aspects in its design as a result of the width of the sections, due to the inclination when they cross the infrastructures.

            Length: 12.479 km

            Sant Joan Despi - Sants

The aforementioned works consist of carrying out the necessary actions for the assembly of track on the crowning of the sub-ballast layer already executed in the platform project or upper level of platform concrete in tunnels and viaducts of the Sant Joan Despí - Sants subsection of the section between Vilafranca and Barcelona, of the Madrid - Zaragoza - Barcelona - French Border High Speed Line. The section has a length of 12.479 km of double track.

The section has 3,268.117 m of double track on ballast and the rest (9,211.173 m) of double track on slab. It includes two sidings (to the right and left of the general tracks) at Prat de Llobregat Station between Pk 4+735.554 (CM of turnout 2) and Pk 5+426.101 (CM of turnout 5), the installation of fourteen turnouts and four expansion devices.

It also includes the supply and installation of a special blanket under the slab track to reduce vibrations and meet the requirements of the environmental impact statement.

              Length: 2.58 km

              La Sagrera: Sant Andreu Sector

The aim of the project is to eliminate the existing urban barrier between the neighbourhoods of Sant Andreu and Sant Martí (Barcelona) created by the current suburban lines Vilafranca - Maçanet and Vilanova - Mataró. This corridor is also being used by long-distance trains and freight trains.

Part of the work being carried out consists of lengthening the high-speed tracks in the Sant Andreu sector, as well as improving the alignment of the commuter lines, which interferes with the HSR line. Among other important activities, the "Sant Andreu Comtal" station is completely renovated and the new "La Sagrera" station and the "Sant Andreu" workshops are being built. The existing lines are being completely renovated to improve access to the future "La Sagrera" station and make them compatible with the new high-speed railway line to be built.

As the main unit of the contract, the scope of works comprises the complete installation of the railway tracks, including track laying, electrification, signalling and telecommunications system.

Most of the alignment extends underneath the city centre of Barcelona, so the works are executed in a complex urban environment. The client's most important requirement was that rail traffic could not be interrupted for the duration of the works. For such a proposal, ACCIONA agreed special conditions for each rail operator in the area.
