Climate footprint

Climate change poses a major threat to socio‐economic and ecological systems worldwide. The scientific evidence for the existence of global warming caused by greenhouse gases generated by human activity propels a worldwide political commitment led by the EU, which has set a goal of reducing emissions by 20% by 2020, compared to 1990 figures.

The coming years will be a key period that will lay the foundation for the transition to a model of more sustainable energy. ACCIONA wants to take part in this change by leading the sector in the ambitious goals set by the EU Council to cover 20% of primary energy demand with renewables by 2020. This commitment extends to other activities of the company, enhancing actions focused on energy efficiency and savings, both in‐company and in our products.

To do this, ACCIONA has launched a climate change strategy which aims to fine‐tune measure, optimize energy consumption, manage risk and leverage opportunities, both related to supporting international business development and the promotion of products to exploit this opportunity, already boasting a significant portfolio.

The main parameters marked are:

• Energy efficiency: in‐company energy consumption optimization.
• Market innovation and new business opportunities for services and products.
• Promotion of projects within the Kyoto Protocol framework to support international development.

Weekly counter of avoided emissions

ACCIONA shows on its website a counter with the weekly and annual CO2 emissions avoided by our company worldwide via the use of renewable energy.

The calculation is performed by obtaining the amount of CO2 emissions avoided the previous week, the result of adding power generated by the company through renewable sources, energy generated by each country operating that week (MWh) and the annual emission factor of each country (tCO2/MWh).
