Consuelo Crespo Bofill

Consuelo Crespo Bofill was born in Barcelona in 1953. She studied at the University of Barcelona gaining a degree in Biological Sciences and a Master in International Decentralized Cooperation: Peace and Development, within the United Nations Peace and Development framework at the University of the Basque Country. She has taken extracurricular courses in subjects such as psychology and emergency procedures at Barcelona Escuela Llar and at organizations including Caritas and the Red Cross.

After working for several years as a coordinator of children’s activities in marginalized areas of Barcelona, and with women immigrants in Vizcaya, she began volunteering for UNICEF through the Bilbao headquarters in 1993. In 1994, she was named President of the UNICEF Committee in the Basque Country, a position she held until October, 2005, when she assumed the presidency of the Spanish Committee for UNICEF.

Her commitment to social welfare work led her to experience first-hand the reality of life in several developing countries in Africa, America and Asia.

She holds a strong conviction that investing in child welfare is the key to sustainable human development. Thus she has led a significant transformation within the Spanish Committee for UNICEF. Her aim is to break the cycle of poverty that’s passed on from generation to generation by involving all social sectors in the defence of the rights of the child, so that they become universal ethical principles and international norms.

She is a member of the Advisory Council for the Social Innovation Foundation for Culture, a member of the Mirada Solidaria Foundation Committee, a member of the Advisory Council of the Esplai Foundation, a member of the Prince of Asturias Foundation Committee on the award for International Cooperation, a member of the Governing Council of the University of Deusto and President of the Spanish Committee for UNICEF. In recognition of her work, she is an honorary member of the Nuevo Futuro Association, of the Mujer Siglo XXI Association, and of the Scientific Council of the International Institute of Political Science. She received a Recognition from the Alta Dirección Forum.

She is married and has four children.
