Within the WATINTECH European innovation project, the main objective of the water business of ACCIONA is the development of a treatment for the decentralized wastewater management based on forward osmosis that allows both the effective recovery of water and other local resources.

This new treatment will allow better control of wastewater infrastructures under changing climatic situations, relieving the pressure on centralized systems, as well as increasing the life cycle of the asset and reducing the costs associated with the wastewater treatment process.

The water business of ACCIONA has developed the project in its demonstration plant located at the Wastewater Treatment Plant of San Pedro del Pinatar (Murcia, Spain), which processes a flow rate of 3 m3/hour and operates under real conditions. This means that the results obtained can be extrapolated to any other plant. The project consortium is completed with the Catalan Water Research Institute (ICRA), Universidad Nueva (Lisbon), the Technical University of Denmark and the University of Catania.

The Watintech project, awarded in the iWater Salon in Barcelona in the Best Research category 2016 for its potential for improving the efficiency of treatment processes, has received funding from the WATERWORKS Era-Net with co-financing from the CDTI and the European Union's Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.
