ACCIONA volunteers have provided sustainability training to over 50,000 students in five years

06/09/2017
  • 660 ACCIONA workers participated in this year's Volunteer Day, giving information sessions on sustainability to students aged 6–10 in 15 countries

More than 660 ACCIONA employees participated in this year's corporate volunteer day, an annual event that consists of ACCIONA employees giving information sessions to school kids between the ages of 6 and 10 in order to raise their awareness about the importance of sustainable development.

This is the sixth year of this initiative, in which over 2,600 volunteers have taught sustainability to 53,000 students to date.

This year, ACCIONA's volunteers provided training to approximately 14,000 children at schools in 15 countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, India, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Spain and the United States. This year there was also a specific workshop for children with intellectual disabilities.

With its Volunteer Day, and using the "Guardians of the Earth" characters it has created, ACCIONA seeks to raise awareness among children of the active role they can play in pursuing sustainable development; another goal is for employees to adopt the company's philosophy, based on low-carbon business models, activities that avoid CO2 emissions, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and optimising energy and water consumption.

This year, in addition to addressing issues of climate change, alternative energies, the water cycle and responsible consumption, the sessions included new issues, such as gender equality and combating hunger, with a focus on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
