Sustainability master plan
A new thrust for managing Sustainability.
ACCIONA embraces Sustainability as an essential strategic commitment. We see it as something that sets us apart from the rest of the field in terms of competitiveness, value-creation and profitability.
In 2009, Sustainability received a new thrust at ACCIONA: that year we set up a boardroom-level Sustainability Committee and a Department of Innovation and Sustainability comprising several sections - Sustainability, Processes, Quality and Environment, and Regulation, all at the highest corporate level.
Moreover, ACCIONA has drawn up a Master Plan regulating all Sustainability activities across the entire organization. The Plan was formally announced at the Company's 2010 Annual Executives' Convention along with the Strategic Plan 2010-13.
The Sustainability Master Plan comprises six special tools (Stakeholder Engagement, Best Practices, Risks, Commitments, Presentation of Results and Dissemination) and six Plans that give structure to Sustainability activities related to People, the Value Chain, the Environment, Innovation, Good Governance, and Society.
Tools:
- Stakeholder Engagement. We engage in dialogue with our stakeholders to understand their expectations regarding the social and environmental effects of ACCIONA's activities. Our conclusions enable us to translate opinion into tangible actions to be included in the Sustainability Master Plan.
- Good Practices. Carrying out studies of best practices in Sustainability enables us to design new plans.
- Risks. Our risk map includes sustainability risks that take into account not only financial factors, but also the social and environmental impact of our projects.
- Commitment. CCIONA meets the challenges of Sustainability by taking on measurable and verifiable commitments. These are laid out in the Master Plan, defined by lines of work and cover a four-year period.
- Evaluation and Presentation of Results. We measure the performance of ongoing activities and present the results to the Sustainability Committee, the DJSI and the Global Compact, among others.
- Dissemination. The management and dissemination-inside and outside the organization-of the sustainability strategy through active participation in national and international organizations; websites, blogs, forums, congresses and conferences.
Initiatives:
- Our People. We strive to improve ACCIONA's commitment to its people through training, performance assessment on the basis sustainability-related goals, equal opportunities policies, workplace health and safety policies and measures aimed at achieving a balance between work and home.
- The Value Chain. We extend the Company's sustainability commitments to suppliers, contractors and customers by disseminating ethical principles for the supply chain; developing a ratings table for suppliers and putting together a catalogue of sustainable products and services.
- The Environment. ACCIONA sets out to integrate the environment factor in the way we carry out our activities, with the two-fold aim of improving environmental efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint.
- Innovation. Innovation is directed towards sustainability, taking in three factors: technology, operations and the development of new business models, by committing to R&D investment and increasing the number of registered patents.
- Good Governance. ACCIONA aims to become an exemplar of integrity and responsibility in the markets in which it operates, e.g. by giving its people a thorough grounding in the Company's Code of Conduct.
- Society. The social dimension is part and parcel of the ACCIONA decision-making process across the entire organization. We aim to encourage local development by increasing and placing a tighter focus on social investment and measuring the social impact of all ACCIONA projects.
