• A graduate in Law, he started his career at the Banco de Vizcaya in 1962. After working in a number of managerial positions he was appointed Managing Director in 1986.
• In 1988, following the bank’s merger with Banco Bilbao he was appointed Managing Director of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya.
• He has been the Chairman of Ahorrobank, Banco de Crédito Canario Banco Occidental, the Institute of Biology, Delagrange Laboratories and Managing Director of Antibióticos, S.A.
• He is currently the Chairman of Banco Gallego, Managing Director of Inditex and a member of the European Advisory Board of Citigroup Global Market.
• In addition he has been Chairman of the Royal Board of Trustees of the Reina Sofía National Museum Art Centre and a member of the Royal Board of Trustees of the Prado Museum.
