ACCIONA Agua to manage operations and maintenance of 20 sewage plants in south-western Madrid province.

The Seville project involves an expansion of the Guadalquivir sewage treatment plant, and the Zaragoza contract is for sanitation and wastewater treatment projects.

11/08/08The temporary joint venture between ACCIONA Agua, ACCIONA Infrastructures and RIEGOSUR, was awarded the contract for the design and construction of an extension to the Guadalquivir sewage treatment plant in the municipality of Palomares del Río (Seville). The Aragon Regional Government has also awarded ACCIONA Agua, in partnership with ARASCON, further contracts for the construction of sanitation and sewage treatment projects in a number of towns in Zaragoza as well as their operation and maintenance for a 20-year period. And Canal de Isabel II, Madrid's water utility, has awarded ACCIONA Agua a two-year contract for indirect management of the sewage treatment plants in the middle reaches of the Guadarrama river basin (batch V) in Madrid.

Expansion of the Guadalquivir wastewater treatment plant

Egmasa, an environmental management company which belongs to the Andalusia Regional Government's Department of the Environment, has chosen the temporary joint venture (ACCIONA Agua, ACCIONA Infrastructures and RIEGOSUR) to design the Guadalquivir wastewater plant extension, with the possibility of running posterior operations.

The original Guadalquivir plant, in the municipality of Palomares del Río (Seville), became operational in 1988 and currently treats wastewater from the Aljarafe district and its surroundings. Because of population growth in the towns in the area and the imminent connection of more towns to the treatment system, the plant's capacity needs to double.

The basic goal of the project, worth 19.77 million euros, is to expand the current sewage plant so as to cover the current and future needs of the towns in the Aljarafe district and to improve the plant's water treatment performance.

Wastewater treatment for seven towns in Aragon

The Aragon Regional Government made the decision to treat 100% of the region's waste water. To this end, it drafted the Aragon Special Sanitation Plan, which divides the region into areas of operation.

ACCIONA Agua, with Aragonese construction company ARASCON (30% stake in the consortium), has been chosen as finalists to build the sanitation and sewage treatment infrastructure for the towns in zone 7B (La Almunia de Doña Godina, Lumpiaque, Morata de Jalón, Herrera de los Navarros, Alfamén, Longares and Villanueva de Huerva) including its posterior maintenance for 20 years under a concession contract. The ACCIONA Agua-ARASCON consortium will invest 27.46 million euros in sanitation infrastructure.

The area currently has a population of over 20,000 and the installations' rated capacity will be 15,720 m3/day.

Projects in Madrid

ACCIONA Agua has also been awarded a contract for the operation and maintenance of 20 sewage plants for Madrid's water utility, Canal de Isabel II, in the middle reaches of the Guadarrama river basin (batch V), for 2 years; the project represents an investment of 4.6 million euros. All the plants are located in the southwest of the Madrid region, in 19 towns (including Navalacarnero, Villaviciosa de Odón, Valdemorillo, Cenicientos, Cadalso de los Vidrios and Sevilla la Nueva) with a total population of 358,950. The contract may be extended by a further two years, renewable annually.
