Biofuels

Biofuels are an emerging sector due to the need to reduce polluting emissions associated with transport and to minimise dependence on oil. The objective of the European Union is to meet 5.75% of the transport requirements in 2010 with biofuels, and this figure rises to 5.83% in the case of Spain according to the Plan for renewable Energies approved by the Government in 2005.

The company is operational in the field of biodiesel with a production plant in Navarra and several more at the development stage. It also has a bioethanol plant based on the distillation of alcohol in Castilla La Mancha, with an annual production of 26,000 tonnes.

In addition to being renewable, biodiesel substantially reduces polluting emissions. Use of biodiesel eliminates 99% of sulphur dioxide emissions, 90% of CO2 emissions, 22% of carbon monoxide emissions, and 63% and 52%, respectively, of hydrocarbons in burning and suspended particles.

ACCIONA produces biodiesel at the plant in Caparroso (Navarra) from first-use vegetable oils: soya; rapeseed; sunflower; and palm. In 2006, 30,727 tonnes of biodiesel were produced, avoiding the emission of 83,905 t of CO2, by substituting vehicle diesel produced from fossil fuels, At present, as a result of the enlargement of the plant, production has doubled to reach 70,000 tonnes.

Two service stations in Navarra directly sell the biodiesel 100% produced by ACCIONA and it has been well-received by consumers. In addition, in February 2008, ACCIONA opened one of the first service stations in Spain to offer two types of biofuels: biodiesel and bioethanol. This is the first installation of its type set up by the company and is located on the A-12, Pamplona-Logroño, six kilometres from the capital of Navarre. It should be noted that the service area have been constructed using ecoefficiency criteria and include thermal and photovoltaic panels to meet its energy requirements.

In addition, ACCIONA is involved in the Cenit PIBE research project which is studying the development of biodiesel in Spain, by increasing the availability of local raw materials, identifying new and improved product applications and reducing production costs.
